For years Fischgut Primus is a specialist in
the reproduction of sturgeons. Therefore we can offer a wide variety
of sturgeon species in different sizes.
Because of the boneless meat and the fish eggs
(caviar), the production primary for fish consumption was tried.
But due to lack of experience in the first years of the sturgeon
breeding program there were problems, which had to be overcome.
Problems every owner of a pond knows by heart nowadays. That incorporates
carnivorous birds, unavailability of special feed and algae.

Furthermore the artificial reproduction of sturgeon is very difficult
and the costs for the production are at the moment unreasonably
high. Owing to the gradual growth of water expanses in Germany and
also to the growing construction of ponds for ornamental fish like
Koi-carp, together with the extraordinary physique of sturgeons
and their nearly nonexistent flight reaction, the sturgeon is used
increasingly as ornamental fish these days.
Currently we keep the following sturgeon species in the Fischgut,
of which of course not every species is practical in a garden pond.
Worth mentioning is the Hausen, as a carnivore it would be a pity
for the other fish, if he would be kept there. Another fish would
be the paddlefish, who couldn't find nourishment in crystal clear
Koi-pond water.

Some of those sturgeons that are kept on the Fischgut, are also
reproduced here. This was only possible because of the modern warm-water
breedingroom technoligy.
The different sturgeon species can be told apart by their physique
as well as their different behavior in a natural environment and
in garden ponds. This way everyone can choose the sturgeon that
fits his or her demands.
Needles to say, that the better the quality of your water the better
you can see the darker colored sturgeons.

The Sibirian sturgeon
is relatively easy to reproduce. He is fast growing and very popular
because of the great quality of the meat. The A. baeri, even so he
has a dark coloring and is living at the bottom, becomes day by day
more trendy, because of the low price.
The Starry sturgeon has by far the most beautiful coloring, since
he has on top the white bone plating also white sparkles. Furthermore
is the "shovelnose"-Rostrum (snout) a very significant mark
and a good feature to distinguish it from the Russian sturgeon.

He is a
nearly tireless swimmer and is like a merry-go-round in the ponds.
The Sterlet is the smallest of the sturgeons and very practical for
medium sized ponds. The formerly also in Germany living sturgeon has
a brownish coloring with some small bone plates and white finmargins.
He is becoming mature (reproducible) quite fast and is often used
as parental generation for hybrids. It is the only sturgeon species
that can survive with albinism, thus it is a special attraction in
the garden ponds. |

 |
The Adriatic sturgeon
and the White sturgeon have a similar appearance. As adults they have
immense body sizes, as a result they only can be brought into large
ponds. Fischgut Primus has mature fishes of this sturgeon species
from 30 to 200 kg.
The Russian sturgeon is one of the most interesting sturgeons regarding
garden ponds, because it has a coloring with high contrast. The fish
stays mostly at the bottom, but during foraging it can also be found
at the banks. |

Russian
sturgeon in its early life stages has, like most sturgeons, problems
with thread algae. Adults are easily tamed and even feed out of hand.
Currently they are the most desired sturgeons for garden ponds.
The Beluga is the biggest freshwater fish worldwide and the only carnivore
in the sturgeon family. It is mostly known for the luxurious beluga
caviar.
Until now the Caviar nor the production of sturgeonmeat is not lucrative,
because the costs for production were to high. |

 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
It should be mentioned
that the sturgeon is very resistant against illnesses, parasites,
and a wide range of watertemperatures, they can live in.
Normal food for sturgeons are animals that live at the bottom, like
mollusks, snails, worms and small crabs. Most sturgeons are most willing
to accept "artificial" feed, which brings great relief to
the general pond owner. |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
For the
sturgeon farming we exclusively use sturgeon feed and no trout feed,
because that had the best successes in the regard of health and groth.
The feeds that fits to your sturgeons of course can be delivered by
Fischgut Primus in the different sizes and amounts.
Some of the sturgeons can now be reproduced and that's a good thing
too. All of the 24 sturgeonspiecies of the world are near extinction.

 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
But also the boom in
the private sector (as ornamental fish) helps to raise the reproductions
in aquacultures and that helped the restpopulations. Those are staying
for the most part untouched and on the other hand sturgeonfarming
is mostly connected with programs for renaturation of native species.
When sturgeons are handled with proper responsibility, as should be
true for Koi-carp, a sturgeon can bring you a lot of pleasure. But
please take care to choose the fitting sturgeon for the dimensions
of your pond. Sturgeons can become very big fish.
